Why have a birth doula?
With what I've learned from Dona International, and from my own experience, a Doula is present to:
-Recognize birth as a special and unique experience mothers will remember all their lives.
-Understand the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of women in labor
-Assist women in preparing for and carrying out their plans for birth
-Help women to feel empowered throughout pregnancy, labor and delivery; facilitate empowerment in new motherhood
-Stay with women throughout the labor and help this life changing experience be remembered in a positive way
-Provide continuous emotional support, physical comfort measures, and an
objective viewpoint, as well as help women get the information they need
to make informed decisions and feel well supported
-Encourage mothers and partners in open, trusting, honest communication with their care providers.
-Help partners to participate at their comfort level, feel knowledgeable and empowered by this event
You are strong. You are brave. Your body was made to birth your baby and your baby was made for your body to birth.
According to a compilation of research on the effectiveness of doulas that was published in March of 2013 by Rebecca Dekker, PhD, RN, APRN, having a doula present resulted in:
•31% decrease in the use of Pitocin for augmented labor*
•28% decrease in the risk of C-section*
•12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth without augmentation*
•9% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
•14% decrease in the risk of newborns being admitted to a special care nursery
•34% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience*
For four of these outcomes,*
results with a birth doula were better than all the other types of continuous support
that were studied. For the other outcomes, there was no difference between
types of continuous support.
Through DONA International I am trained as a birth doula and in breastfeeding support. I am a certified lactation counselor through Healthy Children's Project, the Center for Breastfeeding. I believe in protecting a woman's birthing experience and I support women in the vision they have for their special journey. I am an active member of the Bozeman Community and Childbirth Community, alike. Following two natural and miraculous labors, I have been able to successfully nurse both of my children for over 36 months total. Professional experience includes high risk, water birth, cesarean birth, and both natural and augmented labors. I will attend at hospital births, birth centers, and home births. No unattended home births will be considered. I have experience with infant resuscitation and am NRP certified, experienced in Rebozo techniques, and Prenatal/postpartum exercise. I am experienced with and a distributer of DoTERRA oils for pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. I am here to support you throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
